Do I need a website?

It is really difficult these days to see why any business wouldn't need some kind of representation on the Internet. Certainly if your a service based business or trader of some kind the Internet is pretty much as important as the Yellow Pages telephone directory. If you are an independent operator or professional, offering services for hire, would it not be beneficial to have information available 24 hours of everyday that you could point people toward and say "Look there, that is what I do". I suppose if you operate a coffee shop in a local shopping center then perhaps you don't need a website but Gloria Jeans certainly has one as does The Coffee Club.

A more appropriate question could be "what kind of presence do I need?" Websites now come in all shapes and sizes from personal blogs and vanity sites to very large and sophisticated commerce sites integrated into corporate networks giving global access to real time data.

In order to determine what type of site will be most of benefit to your business, you need to step back and think about the way you operate in the real world. How do you interact with your prospects, customers and staff. What types of business activities do you undertake and how can they benefit from internet support.

If your business has a broad product range then perhaps a product catalogue would help persuade potential customers to consider you as a supplier. Perhaps your product is very niche and not widely understood. The internet is an ideal medium, with the use of animations, sound and video, for explaining complicated processes and ideas.

You may have a very simple business, a house painter for instance. You have your mobile phone number on the side of the ute and a listing in the Yellow Pages. Both legitimately high profile marketing methods. If you added a website address to both of those you could tell a bigger story, even if it is only one page, with pictures of your work and a list of your aras of expertise.

About the articles

In the general course of operating my business I am asked a lot of questions about the Internet in general, about on-line marketing and Search Engine Marketing. It is hoped that you will find these articles either informative or entertaining or both and that they serve as conversation starters.
